Tesco Planning Application in - Have your Say
The Planning Office is undoubtedly
influenced by public opinion.
Here is some useful information for
anyone wishing to support our campaign by writing to the Planning Office about
the proposal to open a Tesco Express in Cuffley.
The more individual letters the
Planning Office receive opposing the scheme the greater chance that we will
succeed in our attempt to Stop Tesco opening in Cuffley.
Letters should be addressed and sent
so they arrive preferably on or before Thursday 19 July 2007.
The date of the planning meeting at
which we anticipate the applications will be considered is
2 August 2007.
The public can attend.

Re: Development of the former “Harvester”, [59 Station Road Cuffley]
Examples of opening comments you may wish to consider.
- I have lived in Cuffley for --Years
- I wish to express opposition to the planning
applications to convert the former Harvester into a Tesco Express store.
- My main reason is[ reasons are]
- I have nothing against Tesco- I shop quite regularly
at their supermarkets -but I do not want a Tesco in our village.
Why you oppose the proposals - Examples are given below,
some of which may conform to your own particular views, which you may care to
select to include in your letter.
- Increase congestion in Station Road
- Small number of parking spaces could lead to illegal
parking either in Station Road, Tolmers Road or Theobalds Road
- The proposed enlargement of the entrance is positioned
within the zig-zag lines of the pedestrian crossing which present
significant danger to pedestrians
- There are a range of existing shops within Cuffley
which can more than satisfy the demand for "top-up" shopping needs
- Proposal suffers from poor car park access, vehicles
entering or leaving Tescos will find their path blocked by goods being
transferred from lorries to the store
- The parking spaces shown on the plan at the front of
the store will not provide sufficient space for cars to access or leave when
Lorries are parked opposite.
- Past experience shows that a Tesco Express will lead
to a decline in business for the current village shops and possible closure
of many which would certainly affect the vitality and viability of the
village.
- Large delivery vehicles and the possibility of more
than one arriving at the same time would result in serious congestion in
Station Road which, already suffers with too much traffic.
- The Tesco Traffic Survey findings bear no relation to
the volumes of traffic or peak traffic flow periods I experience when I
visit the village centre.
- Top up shopping is most likely to take place at peak
periods during the day, the volume of traffic entering and leaving Tesco car
park will cause serious hold ups in traffic flow
- The number of allocated car parking spaces in Tescos
car park will not be adequate to service the flow of traffic at peak periods
during the day
- Noise and disturbance, particularly from delivery
vehicle waiting and unloading will present a serious nuisance to nearby
residents.
- Increased danger to pedestrians, particularly children
going to and from school, at peak periods during the day
- Tesco is already over represented in the area with 10
stores within a 5 mile radius of Cuffley and with over 50% of all grocery
sales in the EN postcodes
- Increasing uniformity of Britains High Streets
resulting in bland retail landscapes are not what we want in Cuffley.
