Charles Walker MP, Friday 15th June

Cuffley residents' concerns raised in Parliament

Following a recent approach by the Keep Cuffley Rural campaign local MP Charles Walker, during an adjournment debate on Friday [15 June 2007] in the House of Commons, raised issues directly relating to Cuffley residents concerns over the proposed Tesco development.

The main points arising during his speech were;

·         Planning Laws-He asked that current planning laws be reviewed so that they allow local Councils to take account of public opinion when it comes to the establishment of new retail outlets.

·         Tesco Dominance-He quoted data supplied by Keep Cuffley Rural demonstrating the level of Tesco dominance in the surrounding area of Cuffley.

·         Threat to small Shopkeepers-He expressed concern about the future of small village shops and the loss to the community that would result from the dominance of Supermarkets.

·         Community Duty to support local shops- He emphasised that we in the community have a duty to support local shops as he does.

·         Better Promotion of local shops- He felt that often local shops do not adequately promote the services they provide as effectively as they could.

In addition to Charles Walker speech on the floor of the House he has also agreed to pass on a planning issue raised by Keep Cuffley Rural planning sub-committee relating to a survey the Council requested in 2001, which is included in the District Plan 2001-2011, assessing the Additional retail floor space requirements for the whole district. The assessment report concluded that for the whole District only 300 sq. metres of additional Convenience Goods, IE Food floor space would be required for the Welwyn & Hatfield district up to 2011. This equates to less than that proposed for the Cuffley Tesco alone.

Charles Walker has also conveyed his constituents concerns to Welwyn & Hatfield Council, Hertfordshire County Council and Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of Tesco.

Charles Walker-Local MP assists our campaign

Charles Walker our local MP confirms that he has conveyed Cuffley constituents concerns to Welwyn Hatfield Council, Hertfordshire County Council and Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of Tesco.

14th June 2007 - He also intends to raise this matter on the floor of the House of Commons tomorrow [15 June 2007].

Amongst other things, he confirms that he is going to ask that current planning laws be reviewed so that they allow local Councils to take account of public opinion when it comes to the establishment of new retail outlets.

He goes on to say that as it stands, there is very little Councils can do to turn down an application if it complies with the law. He adds that alongside the above , we in the community have a duty to support local shops as ultimately, it is the community that decides where we spend our money and who we spend it with.

He has also agreed to raise with the Councils Planning Department a specific question raised by the Keep Cuffley Rural campaign relating to a survey the Council  requested in 2001, which is included in the District Plan-2001-2011, assessing  the Additional retail floorspace  requirements for the whole district .

The assessment report concluded that for the whole District only 300 sq metres of additional Convenience goods, IE food floorspace would be required for the Welwyn and Hatfield district. This equates to less than that proposed for the Cuffley Tesco Express alone!
