 Letters to Tesco

Tesco are undoubtedly influenced by public opinion.

We have compiled some useful information for anyone wishing to support our campaign by writing to Tesco about the proposal to open a Tesco Express in Cuffley.

The more individual letters Tesco receive opposing the scheme the greater chance of a re-think.

Examples of opening comments you may wish to consider.

·         I have lived in Cuffley for --Years

·         I attended your consultation meeting in Cuffley some weeks ago

·         I wish to express my strong opposition to your proposals to convert the Harvester into a Tesco Express

·         My main reason is [ reasons are]

·         I have nothing against Tesco- I shop quite regularly at your supermarkets -but I do not want a Tesco in our village.

Why you oppose the proposals - Examples are given below, some of which may conform to your own particular views, which you may care to select to include in your letter.

·         Increase congestion in Station Road

·         Small number of parking spaces would lead to queuing or illegal parking either in Station Road or Tolmers Road

·         There are a range of existing shops within Cuffley which can more than satisfy the demand for "top-up" shopping needs

·         Proposal suffers from poor car park access, vehicles entering or leaving Tesco will find their path blocked by goods being transferred from lorries to the store

·         Past experience shows that a Tesco Express will lead to a decline in business for the current village shops and possible closure of many resulting in unattractive empty units

·         The proposed car park entrance is too close to the existing pedestrian crossing

·         Large delivery vehicles and the possibility of more than one arriving at the same time would result in serious congestion in Station Road which, already suffers with too much traffic.

·         Top up shopping is most likely to take place at peak periods during the day, the volume of traffic entering and leaving Tesco car park will cause serious hold ups in traffic flow

·         The number of allocated car parking spaces in Tesco's car park will not be adequate to service the flow of traffic at peak periods during the day

·         Noise and disturbance, particularly from delivery vehicle waiting and unloading will present a serious nuisance

·         Increased danger to pedestrians, particularly children going to and from school, at peak periods during the day

·         Tesco is already over represented in the area with 10 stores within a 5 mile radius of Cuffley and with over 50% of all grocery sales in the EN postcodes

·         Increasing uniformity of Britain's High Streets resulting in bland retail landscapes are not what we want in Cuffley
